import Ngl results in a Segmentation fault

I am trying to get started using PyNGL running Ubuntu (linux) 9.04. After
downloading the binaries I start python and enter:

import Ngl

This results in a Segmentation fault. This is apparently due to the shared
objects fplib.so and _hlu.so since attempting to import either of them also
results in a Segmentation fault. If anyone has a suggestion I would
appreciate it.
