pynio int64 support

Hi all,
Sorry if this has been talked about before, I didn't see anything in the archives. Are there any plans to support writing int64 (and uint64) to netcdf files in pynio? Is this related to not supporting standard netcdf4 files: And if so is that something that is likely to change?

As I understand it, NetCDF supports int64:
but the pynio docs state that it does not because netCDF does not:

If there are no plans to support 64bit ints, can anyone recommend a way around this? Is there an easy way (e.g. using NCO or NCL commands) to combine two 32bit ints written by PyNio into a single 64bit int?
