libgfortran again

Dear developers,

I am having the infamous libgfortran problem now too. On the new
machine with x86_64 ubuntu linux (10.04), i cannot make PyNIO 1.3 nor
PyNIO 1.2 work because:

 "libgfortran.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

I know there were quite some posts about it, but unfortunately none
really helped, because of the system architecture mainly. Could you
please help me out?

GCC version:
gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5)
