Write non-standard characters to ps-file

Hello,
how to write non-standard characters, like some of the Norwegian
characters, to a ps-file generated by PyNGL? For instance how to write
a text string containing capital A with ring, like {\AA} in LaTeX?

The closest I get is this communication: http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Support/talk_archives/2003/0166.html
  - is the status unchanged?
